In January 2010 the new insurance card with microprocessor was sent out. It also has a new card number (in accordance with EU standard) and the new 13-digit social insurance / AHV or insurance number. At the front of the card there is now a microchip. In future, insured persons, if they wish so, can have their medical emergency data stored on the chip. The back of the card continues to be the European health insurance card for use in other European countries.
